Cordless Tool Battery Storage: How to Organize and Protect Your Batteries on Pegboard

Oct 22, 2026

Every garage has one: the dead battery that was supposed to be charged, and the spare that’s “somewhere.” Cordless tools have taken over the workshop, and the batteries that run them now cost more than some of the tools. Even so, most of us store them in a drawer, a bucket, or wherever we set them down last. This guide covers how to set up cordless tool battery storage on your pegboard wall so you always know where your packs are and which ones are ready. It also covers how to protect them through an Ohio-style winter in an unheated garage.

Why Battery Storage Deserves Its Own Spot

A drill or circular saw is hard to lose. A battery pack isn’t. They’re small, they all look alike, and they move around constantly: from the tool to the charger, from the charger to the bench, from the bench into a coat pocket. That leads to three common problems:

  • Lost packs. You buy a “spare” that turns out to be the third one you own.
  • Dead packs. You can’t tell charged batteries from empty ones, so you grab the wrong one and lose ten minutes.
  • Damaged packs. Batteries tossed in a bin with screws, bits and loose hardware can get scuffed contacts, or worse, metal resting across the terminals.

A dedicated spot on the wall fixes all three. If a hanger is empty, a battery is missing. If every hanger is full, you’re ready to work.

The Simple Battery Station Setup

The best setup puts charging and storage in one place. Here’s how to lay it out on your pegboard:

  1. Mount a shelf for the charger. An 8-inch pegboard shelf fits a single charger. A 14-inch pegboard shelf fits two chargers side by side, which is handy if you run two battery platforms.
  2. Hang battery hangers right next to the shelf. Two or three cordless tool battery hangers directly below or beside the charger give every pack a home.
  3. Use a left-to-right rule. Charged packs go on the hangers. Empty packs go on the charger. When a pack finishes charging, it moves to an open hanger. Nobody has to guess.
  4. Keep it near the tools that use it. Put the station in the same zone as your drills and drivers so the battery is never more than an arm’s length from the tool.

Works With Every Major Battery Platform

Battery hangers aren’t brand-specific. The flat-bottomed cradle on our battery hanger holds the common packs from all the major brands:

  • DeWalt 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT
  • Milwaukee M18 and M12
  • Makita 18V LXT and 40V XGT
  • Ryobi ONE+ 18V
  • Bosch and Ridgid 18V

If you run more than one platform, give each brand its own column on the wall. Your Milwaukee packs never end up in the DeWalt pile, and you can see at a glance how many of each you have.

Protecting Your Batteries in a Cold (or Hot) Garage

Lithium-ion tool batteries are tough, but temperature extremes are hard on them. If your garage isn’t heated or cooled, a few habits go a long way. Always check your tool brand’s manual for exact temperature ranges.

  • Don’t charge a frozen battery. Most tool chargers won’t charge a pack that’s too cold or too hot, and many show a “hot/cold pack” light instead. On a cold morning, bring the battery inside and let it warm to room temperature before charging.
  • Avoid heat traps. Don’t store batteries in direct sun, next to a space heater, or in a hot truck cab all summer. Heat shortens battery life.
  • For long storage, don’t leave packs empty. If a battery will sit for months, store it with a partial charge, not fully drained.
  • Keep the terminals clean and clear. Storing batteries on hangers, away from loose screws, nails and bits, keeps metal from resting across the contacts.
  • In winter, consider bringing the extras inside. If your garage drops well below freezing, keep the packs you aren’t using in a heated space and bring them out as needed.

What Else a Battery Hanger Holds

The same flat cradle that holds a battery pack works for anything with a stable flat base:

  • Jigsaws
  • Palm and trim routers
  • Rotary tools and die grinders
  • Detail sanders
  • Spray cans and lubricant bottles

That’s why a lot of customers buy a few more than they need for batteries alone. Once they’re on the wall, they keep finding uses for them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to store cordless tool batteries?

Store them in a dedicated spot, ideally on a wall hanger next to your charger, in a dry place away from extreme heat and cold. Keep them off the floor and away from loose metal hardware.

Is it OK to keep power tool batteries in the garage?

Generally yes, as long as the garage doesn’t get extremely hot or cold. In a cold climate, let batteries warm to room temperature before charging them, and consider keeping spares indoors during the coldest months. Check your manufacturer’s guidance for exact ranges.

Will a pegboard battery hanger fit my battery?

Our battery hanger fits standard packs from DeWalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Ryobi, Bosch, Ridgid and most other major brands. Not sure? Email Support@ToolHangerz.com with your battery model and we’ll confirm before you order.

Does the battery hanger work on slatwall?
